Cockroaches have the potential to be the most dreaded insect infestation. Whether it’s their slick, oily appearance, the noises they make, or some other reason, no one wants cockroaches living in their home. Having an infestation does not necessarily mean you house is unclean; it just means that your house has a way in and the cockroaches found it.

Cockroaches pose potential health threats once they’ve managed to invade your home. These bugs are vectors for bacteria including salmonella, staph, strep, typhoid fever, cholera, leprosy, plague, and viruses like polio.

Even if they’re not carrying disease, cockroaches can make life miserable for allergy sufferers. They produce proteins that people with asthma can be particularly sensitive to. The fecal matter that cockroaches produce and spread, and their molted exoskeletons can cause serious allergy concerns.

How to Identify a Cockroach Infestation

Cockroach infestations can be pretty easy to spot. If you see a few cockroaches in your home at night your infestation might be in the earlier stages. If they’re roaming around your house and walls during the day, your infestation might be worse than you’d hoped. If you’re finding dead cockroaches around your house this isn’t a sign that the infestation has ended, but rather that it is ongoing.

Roaches will eat anything. This means they’ll venture all over your house even if you don’t see them directly. Looking for cockroach feces around your home is a good way to determine if you have a problem.

Finding an egg case is a sure sign of infestation. The brown, pill-shaped case can hold between 10 and 50 eggs.

Not only do cockroaches make your allergies worse, they can also make your house stink. Cockroaches give off a musty odor created by the oils in their bodies. The smell will get worse the longer the infestation goes unnoticed. Another smell you might notices is the smell of decaying roaches. If you’re smelling decaying cockroaches your infestation has been going on for a while: German cockroaches live about 100 days, while American cockroaches can live anywhere between six months and one year.

If you notice any of these signs, make sure to call Healthy Home Termite & Pest Control to rid your space of cockroaches.

How to Get Rid of Cockroaches

Treatment is often specific to the species of cockroach that has invaded. Usually, cockroaches can be stopped by treating the home’s exterior with insecticide treatments. Applying an insecticide to basements and attics is also a good idea, as cockroaches can enter your home from both above and below. If roaches have taken up residence in your walls, a more intense treatment may be necessary. Healthy Home will use Insect Growth Regulators to stunt the roaches’ ability to reproduce, putting a halt to their life cycle. Then we’ll use bait that appears to be food that will kill off the existing roaches.
