Signs Your Home May Have a Roach Problem

Roaches Crawling On Dirty Dishes in Kitchen

Cockroaches are sneaky nocturnal insects that prefer hiding in dark, moist areas throughout your home. They can get into areas you least expect — like behind your fridge, in the sink, and other appliances. If you believe you have a roach problem in your home, you should learn how to spot the signs of cockroaches, to protect your home and family before an infestation begins.

At Healthy Home Termite & Pest Control, we have seen many signs of roaches in homes all over Atlanta. Here are some key signs to look for.

How to Detect Roaches in Your Metro Atlanta Home

These tell-tale signs could mean your home has a roach infestation. Remember, since roaches are nocturnal, the best time to spot a roach is at night.

  1. Roach feces: Roach will munch on anything they can get to including crumbs, dead skin cells, garbage, and even feces. This will result in a high amount of roach droppings around your home. Roach feces can look like specks of pepper, coffee grounds, or oval pellets, depending on the type of roach it is. Inspect your home for roach feces and pay close attention to your stove, refrigerator, sinks, pantries, and other food storage areas in your home.
  2. Roach eggs: You may not realize it, but roaches are aggressive breeders. This can result in a roach infestation that can be difficult to control. Roaches don’t lay singular eggs — they produce oothecae. These are oblong, brown casings that house many roach eggs! When the egg hatches, the oothecae is left behind, making it a sure-fire sign that you have a roach problem. You might find oothecae with unhatched eggs still inside, but most species of roaches glue the oothecae to sheltered places where humans and DIY pesticides have trouble reaching. Look for oothecae inside pantries, behind furniture, and in other dark, tight areas.
  3. Unpleasant Smell: in the case of a serious infestation, a strong oily or musty odor could be present. The bodies of dead cockroaches can give off a strong smelly as oleic acid is produced during decomposition.
